I’m not going to lie; I’m skeptical. The hype around AI is reaching fever pitch and the music industry never one to miss a trend (or be steamrolled by one) is fully on board. Everyone's talking about how AI is going to revolutionize music production and while I see the potential I also see a path to a homogenized soulless soundscape. By 2025 AI will undoubtedly be a major player but whether it’s a force for good or a creative dead end remains to be seen.

Let's get one thing straight: music production has always been about technology. From the first multi-track tape recorders to the advent of MIDI and DAWs advancements in technology have reshaped how we create music. It wasn't that long ago that recording a "professional" sounding record was something only the elite could afford to access while in the modern world nearly anyone can do it if they have a computer and some relatively cheap hardware. Each step has opened doors for some and closed them for others. The move to digital recording for example made high-quality production accessible to independent artists but it also arguably led to the loudness war and a focus on technical perfection over genuine feeling.

Despite my concerns I believe AI also presents some incredible opportunities for independent artists. For those working on a tight budget AI-powered tools can provide access to high-quality production resources that were previously out of reach. Need a professional-sounding mix but can't afford a top-tier engineer? AI can help. Want to experiment with new sounds but don't have access to expensive synthesizers? AI can generate them.
